Can I save a form and finish it later?
Yes, a form can be saved for completion later. This is not advisable on shared computers unless you are saving the form to a portable device such as a USB drive.

Do I have to submit forms electronically?
The forms accessible from australia.gov.au will use one of three submission methods:
- Electronic – the form does not require a signature so data can be submitted electronically
- Paper – the form can be filled in online but will need to be printed, and possibly signed, before submitting it by fax or post.
- Electronic and paper – the data entered into the form by the user is submitted electronically but since a wet signature is required, the form must also be printed and signed before being submitted manually, by fax or post.
For those users wishing to print a form out before filling it in, most agencies will also supply a paper form or a non-fillable electronic form such as a PDF which can be printed before completion.

How do I know electronic submission has worked?
Once a form has been submitted electronically through australia.gov.au a receipt page will display. This page will confirm that the form has been sent to the agency and will also display a receipt number.
The receipt page will include a message thanking you and giving a date of submission. It will also advise on ways of keeping a copy of the submission receipt.

I submitted a form a while ago, but haven't heard anything about it since. What should i do?
You will need to contact the agency to check they have received the form. Before contacting them, make sure you have your receipt number for the form submission. This will help the agency locate your submission. They will be able to tell you the status of your form submission.

I submitted a form electronically, but the Agency doesn’t have it. What should I do?
You will need to contact the agency that owns the form. Before contacting them, make sure you have your receipt number for the form submission as this will help the agency locate your submission. They may ask you to resubmit the form.

The SmartForm looks different to a hardcopy version I have. Which one should I use?
The SmartForm contains all the same fields as the hardcopy form but has a different layout so it is easy to read online. The SmartForm also contains validation rules and hide/show fields to make completing the form as easy as possible.

I need help answering questions in the form.
Most online forms display help text when you hover your mouse pointer over a field in the form. Also look out for Help or Information buttons on the form. Some forms may also have a phone number for you to call if you need help answering questions on the form.
If you can't find any help information within the form go to the website of the agency and find the contact area for the form.

I am getting an error ‘File is damaged and could not be repaired’. What do I do?
This is a general error message, and may be due to several reasons. There are 3 known fixes for this error, dependent on the problem.
- Transient internet problems. Sometimes file downloads can be interrupted. The fix is to click the ‘Complete Form’ link again. The form should display correctly.
- Adobe Reader version. Some forms require a minimum Reader version. The ‘Complete Form’ page checks that your version meets the minimum, but sometimes this is affected by your computer settings. The fix is to upgrade to the latest Reader version. Download the Free Adobe Reader.
- Browser plugin problems. Even if you’ve upgraded to the latest Reader version, sometimes settings are retained from previous versions. This can affect how Reader behaves inside your browser. The fix is to:
- uninstall Adobe Reader, and Acrobat if you also have it
- restart your computer
- if you uninstalled Acrobat, re-install it
- then download and install the latest Reader version.

There’s a message to upgrade Adobe Reader when I opened the form. What should I do?
It is a good idea to use the latest version of Adobe Reader. It is free to download and will enable all the available functionality in the form. Download the Free Adobe Reader.
