How do I set up access to my eHealth record?
To set up access to your eHealth record, you will need to complete the following steps:
- You must first create an australia.gov.au account, or login to your australia.gov.au account if you already have one.
- Once you are logged in, you will be able to link to the National eHealth Record System. You can do this from the My account page.
- You will need to verify your identity with the National eHealth Record System. You can verify your identify by following one of three options:
- Option A – If you have been given an ‘Identity Verification Code’ by a staff member of Centrelink / Child Support / Medicare, use this code when prompted to verify your identity with the National eHealth Record System
- Option B – If you have already linked your australia.gov.au account to Medicare you will have the option to share your Medicare identity with the National eHealth Record System.
- Option C – If you have not linked to Medicare and have not been given an ‘Identity Verification Code’, you can follow the prompts and answer questions about the information that Medicare has for you.
- After you have verified your identity, you will have the option of creating an eHealth record at the National eHealth Record System.
When you return to access an eHealth record you will only need to login to your australia.gov.au account and continue to the National eHealth Record System – available from your australia.gov.au My account page.

Why do I need an australia.gov.au account to access an eHealth record?
An australia.gov.au account is required for you to securely access an eHealth record at the National eHealth Record System. The National eHealth Record System relies on the security and online protection offered by an australia.gov.au account in order to keep access to your eHealth record safe.
An australia.gov.au account lets you access multiple online government services with a single user ID and password. Once you have registered for an australia.gov.au account, you can link it to services relevant to your dealings with government.

Can I access other family members’ eHealth records with my australia.gov.au account?
Yes. Once you have verified your identity with the National eHealth Record System, you will be able to register and create an eHealth record for:
- yourself; OR
- a person who appears on your Medicare card and for whom you have ‘parental responsibility’; OR
- yourself and a person who appears on your Medicare card and for whom you have ‘parental responsibility’.

Can I update my personal details via my australia.gov.au account?
No. Updating your details in your australia.gov.au account will NOT automatically update your details with other government agencies. You will still need to provide changes separately to each of these agencies.

Can I remove access to an eHealth record from my australia.gov.au account?
Yes. You can do this by unlinking the National eHealth Record System from your australia.gov.au account. To do this, you will need to login to your australia.gov.au account and click on 'Remove a link to an online service' under the Manage my account heading.
Please note: unlinking the National eHealth Record System from your australia.gov.au account will not ‘de-activate’ an eHealth record. For more information about managing an eHealth record, visit ehealth.gov.au.
