What is the difference between linking accounts and registering for online services?
Where you have an existing agency online account (e.g. you have a username and password that allows you to access Centrelink online services) you may “link” that agency online account to your australia.gov.au account.
If you do not have an agency online account you may register for agency online services, (i.e. Medicare and Centrelink) through australia.gov.au. You can then use your australia.gov.au user ID and password to access the agency online services.

- Choose which agency account/s you wish to link to your australia.gov.au account from the "Manage Links" page.

- Once the agency has checked you're the right person, you'll be returned to the "Manage Links" page so you can see if the link was successful.
- To add links to more agency accounts, repeat steps 9-11.
- Your linked accounts will now display under the My online services heading.
- Select the LOGIN button located on the top right of most pages within the australia.gov.au website.

Where are my details held if I link my australia.gov.au account to an agency online account or I register for an agency online service through australia.gov.au?
All details that you supply to an Australian Government agency online service through australia.gov.au are held by that agency in their own systems. Linking your agency online service to an australia.gov.au account does not cause the information to be held by australia.gov.au.
australia.gov.au does provide the option for you to enter some details for the personalisation of your account. In the future some information, (such as your address) may be used to answer questions asked through australia.gov.au. Your permission to do this will always be sought first.
-
Do I need to register for multiple agency online services through the same australia.gov.au account?
No. Your australia.gov.au account is anonymous and you may choose to create a new australia.gov.au account for each agency online service you register for.
However, the benefit of having an australia.gov.au account is that you will only need to remember one user ID and password if you do use the same australia.gov.au account to register for different agency online services.
