Do Not Call Register
Service Description
The Do Not Call Register is a secure database where you can list your Australian numbers to opt out of receiving most telemarketing calls and marketing faxes. Registration is free, valid for five years and you can re-register or remove your numbers at any time.
A number is eligible to be registered if it is used or maintained:
- primarily for private or domestic purposes, or
- exclusively for use by a government organisation, or
- exclusively for transmitting and/or receiving faxes, or
- as an emergency service number.
Telemarketing calls or marketing faxes are generally not allowed to be made to numbers on the register, and severe penalties can apply.
There are two fast and easy ways to register numbers:
- or call 1300 792 958
You can also register by completing and posting, faxing or emailing the application form.
Application forms are also available in Italian, Greek, Chinese, Arabic and Vietnamese.
It may take up to 30 days from the date you register for telemarketers/fax marketers to check calling lists against the register and stop contacting you. If you continue to receive calls or faxes, you can complain. There are also standards that the telemarketing and fax marketing industries must adhere to, regardless of whether you are on the register. For more information about the standards, or to lodge a complaint, visit www.donotcall.gov.au or call 1300 792 958.
There are some limited exemptions allowing certain public interest organisations to make specific telemarketing calls or send marketing faxes. Telemarketing calls or marketing faxes can also be made to individuals who have consented to receiving such calls, or where consent can reasonably be inferred. For further information, visit the website.
