Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme - online claiming

Service Description

Online claiming for the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) allows pharmacists to submit a claim to Medicare Australia each time a PBS or Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (RPBS) medicine is dispensed.

In order to meet the privacy and security requirements for the electronic transfer of personal information, online claiming for PBS is enabled using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). PKI ensures that information transmitted over the internet is encrypted, and only the people the information is intended for can access it.

Medicare Australia issues digital certificates to health professionals so that they can undertake secure electronic transactions using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). A digital certificate encrypts the messages transmitted online and provides a digital signature, which is used to sign messages electronically.

Pharmacies need to register for online claiming for PBS to receive a digital certificate. An Online claiming for PBS - information brochure provides an overview.
