Service Description
An australia.gov.au account lets you access multiple online government services with a single user ID and password. Once you have registered for an australia.gov.au account, you can link it to services relevant to your dealings with government.
An australia.gov.au account can be linked to:
- Centrelink online services
- Child Support online services
- Medicare online services
What do I have to do?
- Create an australia.gov.au account, or login to your australia.gov.au account if you already have one.
- Select which online service/s you wish to link to and access.
- Link the online services to your australia.gov.au account.
Centrelink / Child Support / Medicare online services
There are three options for linking:
- Option A – If you have an existing account for online services, you can simply login via your australia.gov.au account, then select the option to link your australia.gov.au account to your existing online services account; or
- Option B – If you have been given an 'Activation Code' by a staff member of (Centrelink/Child Support/Medicare), use this code when prompted and the online service will be automatically linked to your australia.gov.au account; or

Option C – If you want to link to online services and don't have a current online service account or activation code, you can enter a process where you will be asked some personal details so that the agency can confirm your identity, then answer some questions related to the records you have with that agency.
If you are able to confirm your identity via this option, your australia.gov.au account will be automatically linked.
Please note: The process of answering these questions may take about 15 minutes to complete.
National eHealth Record System
In order to gain access to the National eHealth Record System to make an application for registration of an eHealth record, you will first need to link to the National eHealth Record System and then verify your identity. You can verify your identify by following one of three options:
- Option A – If you have been given an ‘Identity Verification Code’ by a staff member of Centrelink / Child Support / Medicare, use this code when prompted to verify your identity with the National eHealth Record System
- Option B - If you have already linked your australia.gov.au account to Medicare you will have the option to share your Medicare identity with the National eHealth Record System.

Option C - If you have not linked to Medicare and have not been given an ‘Identity Verification Code’, you can follow the prompts and answer questions about the information that Medicare has for you.
Please note: The process of answering these questions may take about 15 minutes to complete.
What do I need before I start?
For Medicare, or the National eHealth Record System, you will need your Medicare card number, for Centrelink it is your Centrelink CRN and for Child Support, your Child Support CSRN.
Additional information that could be requested might include:
- the last doctor's visit for which you claimed a rebate,
- your specialist's name,
- your family income estimate,
- the bank account details that payments are made to, and
- receipt numbers and appointment dates.
For the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) you will need an online registration number supplied to you by DVA. If you do not have a registration number, call the Veterans' Access Network (VAN) on 1800 173 858 or email generalenquiries@dva.gov.au before proceeding.
